Resort – La Clusaz / Le Grand Bornand
The Aravis Lodge - where Ski Weekender began! Stay here for our classic catered chalet experience
Our home base and longest-running location, the Aravis Lodge is a sociable chalet-hotel with everything tailored to get you the most skiing with the least hassle. If offers great food, on-site ski hire and a high level of personal service from our resident ski team.
Ski Weekender Classic
This is where Ski Weekender began! The Lodge combines the best of a catered chalet with the benefits of a hotel – it has a lot more communal space and facilities than typical chalets, but retains an easy-going, sociable feel. After a hard day on the slopes, you’ll regularly find guests sharing a drink in the bar, unwinding in the sauna or simply dozing in the lounge after (another) slice of cake. The dining room plays host to some memorable meals, with 40 people around large banquet tables sharing stories and making new friends.
Its 18 bedrooms are all ensuite, with all bathrooms having recently (2012 – 2014) been fully renovated in a fresh, contemporary style. Most rooms are 2 person twin / doubles; there are also 4 larger family rooms, which sleep up to 4 in twin / double beds plus an adult-sized bunk bed. All rooms have fluffy duvets plus extra blankets. Bath and hand towels are provided, along with complementary toiletries.
The ground floor of the Lodge has a large dining and breakfast room, with tea and coffee available throughout the day. It also has a large, sunny lounge with comfy sofas, a smaller TV room with satellite TV and dvd player, and a large licensed bar. The bar has draught beers (Kronenbourg and Guiness) on tap along with a wide range of spirits, bottled beers and soft drinks.
On the basement level you will find the ski/board/boot room with heated bootwarmers and all the latest hire equipment onsite for your convenience. There is also a fully equipped gym and fitness room with CV and weights machines – in case you haven’t had enough exercise already. The modern sauna and massage room always seems to be much more popular however!
Food & Bar
The bar is fully stocked with wines, spirits and beer (Kronenborg) and ale (Guiness) on tap. Most people congregate here between tea and dinner for an aperitif and snacks, and it will see most of the action after dinner. There is a separate section with a table football table, mini table-tennis and giant jenga.
We are told time and again by skiers that the food and wine we serve here really stand out compared to many ski chalets. We believe food is an essential part of a good holiday, particularly a ski holiday, which is why we ensure all our meals are wholesome, filling and delicious.
Our professionally trained chef team cook all our meals with care and attention using local suppliers and healthy ingredients. Our homemade cakes always seem to disappear in a flash at tea time too!
A generous allocation of red and white table wine is provided throughout dinner. The bar also has a wine list of local Savoyarde and other French wines, priced between €12 and €17 per bottle.
The evening meal on Wednesday night is not included on stays at the Lodge – this is the kitchen team’s night off. There are several restaurants right next to the Lodge, or a couple of cheaper takeaway options. We also arrange shuttles to La Clusaz centre on Wednesday nights, where there’s a wide range of different restaurants to choose from.
People with food intolerances, allergies or special preferences are well catered for in the chalet. We are particularly used to cooking a tasty veggie menu for vegetarians and consequently have been accredited by the Vegetarian Society since 2007, the only french chalet to receive this endorsement. In addition to veggies and vegans, we are also able to cater for coeliacs and guests with other dietary intolerances by including delicious wheat free cakes and deserts in our menus as well as tasty main courses.
‘I’ve never come across such amazingly good food… the boys on the vegetarian menu said it was the best they’d ever experienced and having tasted their dishes too I can see why’ Alison M, Jan 2011
Typical Daily Menu
- Breakfast – buffet of cereals, local breads, croissants, pain au chocolat, yoghurts and fruit, with a different hot option daily – typically either porridge or eggs
- Afternoon tea – bread and spreads and a variety of homemade cakes
- Delicious 3 course dinner with local red and white wine.
- Starter: leek and Roquefort tart served on a bed of red endive
- Main: pork loin slow roasted on apples with calvados and cider accompanied by tartiflette and seasonal vegetables or goats cheese bread and butter pudding (veggie option).
- Dessert: peach and raspberry brandy crumble.
The lodge is located in the heart of the small village of St Jean de Sixt, just an hour’s airport transfer from Geneva, ideally located between the two Aravis ski resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand Bornand, only 5 minutes from each.
Access to the lifts and slopes is via our free shuttle service – we run you out in our own minibuses in the morning and back in the afternoon – or via a free ski bus which runs every 30 minutes through the day. In either case, access to the skiing is just 5 minutes away.
There are 3 restaurants, 3 bars, an ATM, post office, mini supermarket and several ski gear and regional produce / gift shops very close to the Lodge – from a few seconds to a couple of minutes walk.
For guests looking for a night out in the centre of resort, we can arrange lifts up to La Clusaz after dinner on an ad hoc basis, and can provide contact details for local taxi companies to book a lift back at the end of the night. La Clusaz has a dozen or so bars and 2 clubs which stay open until the small hours of the night.

Here’s what some of our guests had to say about their stay at the Aravis Lodge:
My friend and I stayed with you at Aravis Lodge last weekend. I have a feeling you’ve heard this before but I’m going to say it anyway – Amazing!!! The pre-trip organisation was top notch, your website is great, easy to use and all the queries I/we had before coming were dealt with in a friendly and efficient way. The guys who transferred us were welcoming and helpful, then, from the moment we arrived, we were taken care of by wonderful, efficient and friendly staff – throughout/everyone was just great. The food, accommodation, bar prices – just everything – was faultless. It was helped by the fact that the majority of others on the trip were friendly/up for a good time, and we certainly had one. I’ve not been one for joining large groups led by ‘hosts’ but I/we had such a good time, meeting new people and being looked after by capable and friendly hosts. Phil – April 2014
Dear Ski weekender Team, THANK YOU for a fantastic holiday at the Aravis Hotel. We returned home on Monday evening after a brilliant 4 day ski trip. The staff at the hotel were all so friendly, helpful and efficient; Excellent ambassadors for your company. The meals (and cakes) were delicious! Hope we can stay with you again soon. Joanne and family – March 2013
Can you let all the staff at the Chalet know that we had a great time, and would certainly come back!! Everything was catered for and you have put together a great scheme for a short ski break, maximising the time we can spend on the slopes. The food was lovely, especially the cakes and afternoon tea which I ate too much of!!! I’ve been to a lot of chalet holidays, Europe and Canada / USA, and this comes close to one of the best with regards to service, food, ease of use etc….. Everything was easy! The rooms were clean and everything was so well looked after. Praise to everyone involved and thanks for a great trip Anonymous feedback survey, winter 2013

Chalet Aravis – same location, lower prices
The Aravis Lodge has a separate chalet annexe building, Chalet Aravis, a few metres away on the same site. This building has its own, private (secure codelocked) entrance. It has 4 twin / double rooms, which aren’t ensuite – they share 2 bathrooms. All meals and social facilities are in the Lodge, which is just across the garden – a walk outside of about 10 seconds.
The package offered at Chalet Aravis is identical to that outlined above, but due to the location and shared bathrooms the price is a bit lower, making this our best value Classic package option.
