Skiing in Le Grand Bornand
The skiing in Le Grand Bornand is centred around all sides of one peak, making it a really well linked ski resort with a variety of terrain and aspect to suit all levels of skier.
Whether you are just starting out, enjoy cruising blues and reds in the sunshine, or are looking for steep black runs and off-piste, there is plenty here for a long weekend or short midweek break. Grand Bornand also boasts what is widely considered to be one of the Top 5 Snowparks in France.
La Clusaz can also be skied on the Aravis ski pass which we include for all ski weekends, midweeks and weeklong holidays, so in total there is 220km to ski here.
Beginner Skiing in Le Grand Bornand
Grand Bornand has an extensive nursery slope area at the top of the Rosay cable car, including ski-gardens and play areas for the kids. This is where many of the lessons start from and there is a good choice of long, gentle green runs which get you covering some distance around the mountain but without any steep or scary bits. Access to the mountain restaurants is good from the green runs, so mixed groups can all still meet up for coffee, lunch etc.
As well as an extensive nursery slope area – Le Grand Bornand has some brilliant confidence building blue slopes where you can really put it all into practice. And the best bit is there are few people, wide pistes with plenty of space, so relax and don’t worry about anyone else!
Intermediate Skiing in Le Grand Bornand
Grand Bornand is an excellent area for intermediate skiers. There is a large predominance of blues and reds, all well linked together allowing you to navigate around the whole mountain during the day.
A ‘hidden valley’ out the back of the resort gives access to a stunning run of around 4km, ideal for a spot of ‘shoosting’ past an old stone chapel. The reds and blues of the Maroly valley are brilliant for building confidence on slightly steeper slopes with wide well groomed pistes and no scary cliff drops off the side! The Grand Bornand area is very well served by fast new lifts, including the new 6-person chairs of Floria and Maroly, which makes for easy navigating.
If you are looking to push your skiing up a level, the reds and blacks off the top of Mont Lachat certainly provide a bigger, steeper challenge. Grand Bornand has some very accessible off-piste terrain to add to the fun, with plenty of good powder runs that our ski hosts can point out!
Advanced Skiing in Grand Bornand
Grand Bornand’s most challenging runs are from the top of Mt Lachat. A mogulled red, Gypaete, runs down the front face overlooking the valley, with some great off-piste lines on both sides. Noire de Lachat accesses 3 very steep, north facing spines and gulleys, whilst the Espace Freeride, which opened in the 2008 season, allows access to an extensive natural powder bowl running out towards the Maroly valley. There are numerous memorable lines to be taken here, with plenty of small hits and drop-offs on the way for those so inclined. To the side of the Espace runs Piste 2000, itself a fairly steep red opening out at the bottom.
There are also some great blacks and off-piste lines accessed from the top of Floria. Probably the best th
ing about Le Grand Bornand is that most people will head to La Clusaz on a powder day, so you really do get the fresh snow all to yourself!
Snowpark in Le Grand Bornand
The Grand Bornand snowpark is widely acclaimed by experts in the freestyle community. It features a 4m high half pipe, a 700m long boardercross, 1 big air, 4 lines of jumps from green to black, and a wide array of boxes, rails and other freestyle units. There is a great atmosphere with music played all day, and a number of freestyle events during the season.
