Ski host snow reports
2 Feb 2013
It’s been snowing again overnight and during the day today which is great for the pistes, however the high winds continue, so again skiing has been limited to Samoens, Morillon and Les Carroz. High winds set to continue until at least Sunday unfortunately.
1 Feb 2013
The weather has been very unsettled the last few days – with rain up to 1800m and poor visibility. The snow is very crispy, first thing in the morning, but softening up as the day goes on. High winds have meant that the links between Samoens, Morrillon and Flaine have all been closed, limiting our ability to ski the usual ski host routes. Ski hosting therefore took in the runs at Samoens 1600, and then we drove round to Morillon at lunchtime to check out the slopes there, where poor visibility and the rain made for testing skiing. By the end of the day, everyone was looking forward to warming up in front of the fire, with a cup of tea and piece of Carolines delicious cake!
24 Jan 2013
After another dump of snow earlier this week, the pistes have all been refreshed, and the off-piste powder topped up again. It’s been very cold and clear for the past 3 days, so the runs are fairly hard packed and fast. The ski hosting group has taken advantage of the fabulous conditions this week by racking up the miles and skiing until last lifts, with the odd chocolat chaud stop thrown in too, if they were good!

Amazing day ski hosting today over to Flaine – clear blue skies, and LOADS of fresh snow. Fresh powder on all the runs, and plenty in between them! Really cold though…extra layers were called for as it was a teeth chattering minus 17 at the top of the Chariande Express chair lift. Cloud came in at about 4pm, just as we got to Chez Mimi’s for a well earned vin chaud ! Oh yes, and the 14km Cascades run is now finally open!
14 Jan 2013
Well…its still snowing…on top of 40cm of fresh powder on Friday, and a beautiful clear sunny day on Saturday, the slopes are in fantastic condition, and not many people on them which makes them it even better! Visibility has been a bit tricky for the past couple of days at lower levels, but over in Flaine above the clouds, it’s been beautiful clear blue skies… perfect for the beautiful long runs down from the top of the bowl. More snow forecast for later this week, and temperatures set to stay very cold (-22 on weds!), which will be excellent for keeping the slopes in tip-top condition.
24th March 2012
Classic spring skiing today over in Flaine. Crisp clear morning, perfectly groomed pistes ripe for a good carve. Softened up during the day making the skiing even more enjoyable, without ever getting too slushy. The snow did get heavy lower down in the afternoon, but what can you expect? Great coverage everywhere still, only a couple of south facing runs in Samoens looking a bit bare. Sun tan coming on well!
21st March 2012
Today was clear skies and sunshine throughout the Grand Massif with super snow conditions. Yesterday we stayed low and enjoyed some good snow in the morning with a fair bit of fresh snow still around. Later in the afternoon it softened up and some interesting patches of sticky, velcro-like snow found on the run to Les Carroz. Today we explored Flaine and the higher pistes were in tip-top condition and you could not help but enjoy them. Mont Blanc was out in full view, very quiet pistes and lovely snow right through the day…. Slopes at 1600m just getting heavy in the afternoon but not yet slushy and still very, very skiable!
Thursday 8th March
Really good skiing conditions in the sunshine over the past couple of days! Fresh snow fell this morning; about 5cm in the village and 8cm at the top. Visibility was tricky this morning and we had to stick to the trees of Morillon and Les Carroz. It gradually cleared through the afternoon but looking forward to a clear and sunny day tomorrow!
Saturday 4th Feb
The good: beautiful pistes, perfectly groomed, no-one about. The snow is holding an edge like never before. If ever there was a time to carve like a race skier, this is it!
The bad: -29C this morning, rising to a high of -21C this afternoon. That explains the quality of the snow and the fact that no-one is about. The mountain cafes were doing a roaring trade though!
The ugly: Alex’s ice man beard, perfectly formed by 9.30am, and slowly thawing now he is back in the chalet.
Saturday Jan 27th
What a day! 10-15cm of fresh snow on top of an already beautifully soft snow pack. After not seeing a thing all day yesterday, the skies parted this morning and we were treated to a few heavenly ski runs down to Flaine and then off from the top of the bowl. Clouds closed in later, but luckily the wine tasted good and as we felt our way back to Samoens we relaxed in the knowledge we had had the best of the day!
